Appliance manufacturer Whirlpool Corp. has announced that it plans to invest $300 million at its facilities in Clyde and Marion, a move that’s expected to create up to 600 jobs.
“This $300 million investment in our Clyde and Marion facilities underscores our dedication to creating jobs, fostering innovation and delivering high-quality, American-made appliances to U.S. consumers,” said Marc Bitzer, chairman and CEO of Whirlpool Corp.
The investment will increase production capacity for Whirlpool’s next generation of washers and dryers, according to state officials.
“Whirlpool’s decision to expand its operations in Clyde and Marion demonstrates why Ohio continues to be the best place in America to manufacture the products that the world relies on,” said Gov. Mike DeWine. “Our strong workforce, manufacturing infrastructure, and culture of innovation make Ohio the ideal home for companies that are driving the next generation of U.S. manufacturing.”
The expansion will be supported through financial assistance from JobsOhio, in collaboration with the Regional Growth Partnership and One Columbus, alongside tax credits approved by the state.
Details about the financial assistance for the project are expected to be announced once the aid agreement is finalized, state officials said.
“In Ohio, forward-looking companies like Whirlpool thrive because they have access to world-class talent, integrated supply chains and a statewide commitment to industrial excellence,” said JobsOhio President and CEO J.P. Nauseef. “This investment shows the strength and diversity of Ohio’s manufacturing sector — from Amgen in bioscience, Intel in semiconductors, Joby in advanced air mobility, and Honda and First Solar in sustainable transportation and energy.”
The Clyde facility is the world’s largest washing machine plant, according to state officials, while the Marion facility recently celebrated 70 years of dryer production.
In northwest Ohio, the advanced manufacturing industry includes more than 1,700 companies, employs 130,000 workers and generates $11.6 billion in Gross Regional Product — accounting for nearly a quarter of the state’s total manufacturing output, according to state officials.
“A globally recognized brand like Whirlpool only makes a bold $300 million investment in the future of the business when it has the highest level of confidence that a community can deliver,” said Jason Hall, CEO of the Columbus Partnership. “Marion workers have shown up for Whirlpool for decades and, in turn, Whirlpool has once again demonstrated its long-term commitment to Marion.”
Whirlpool Corp., which now employs 44,000 workers and operates 40 manufacturing and technology research centers, started in 1911 as a small company in Benton Harbor, Mich.
Last year the company reported approximately $17 billion in net sales. In the second quarter of this year the company reported net sales of $3.7 billion.
In the past decade, Whirlpool Corp. says it has invested $6 billion in capital expenditures in the United States, including research and development and new product development, as part of $23 billion in total spent on its U.S. operations, logistics and workforce.
Whirlpool has approximately 20,000 employees in the U.S., including more than 14,000 at its 10 manufacturing plants, according to the company website.
