Judges find Japanese woman charged with domestic violence didn't understand waiver of counsel

A three-judge panel in the 12th District Court of Appeals recently found that a trial court erred by accepting a woman’s waiver of the right to counsel because she did not have a broad understanding of the case.

The Clermont County Municipal Court found Meiko Kievman guilty of domestic violence, resisting arrest and obstructing official business based on her interaction with a local sheriff’s deputy.

The facts of the case state that Deputy Ryan Early was dispatched to a Batavia residence after receiving reports of a domestic disturbance.
