Legislation would expand murder definition to include drug overdoses

A Dayton lawmaker has drafted a bill that would expand the offense of murder to include causing the death of another as a proximate result of selling the person a controlled substance when the death is caused by an overdose.

“Simply stated, this bill significantly increases criminal penalties for drug dealers,” Rep. Jim Butler, a Republican, said in sponsor testimony for House Bill 508 before the House Judiciary committee.
