Unpaid rent could be garnished from tax refund under proposed legislation

Tenants who skip out on their rent could have to answer to the tax man under a Senate proposal before lawmakers.

Senate Bill 29, sponsored by Sen. Tim Schaffer, R-Lancaster, would provide landlords with a tool to seek unpaid rent from an individual’s income tax refund.

“There are several factors that contribute to the rising cost of renting a home or an apartment and one major factor is when tenants leave their property owner with a financial burden of uncollected rent,” Schaffer said.
