State bar association opposes proposed expansion of Ohio sales tax to legal services

Gov. John Kasich’s 4,200-page budget bill, House Bill 59, includes a proposal to expand Ohio sales tax to legal services, a tax practice some say would be “inappropriate.”

“We believe that to be (an) inappropriate tax policy because of the negative impact it will have on Ohio consumers who need essential legal services in Ohio. It in essence impedes access to justice,” said William Weisenberg, assistant executive director for public affairs for the Ohio State Bar Association.
