A bill that would stiffen criminal penalties for assaulting individuals of certain professions could soon become state law.

House Bill 62, sponsored by Rep. Anne Gonzales, authorizes a $5,000 fine for assault when the victim is a hospital health care professional, health care worker or security officer.

Following a set of amendments that include allowing hospitals to post a notice of the proposed law, the bill was passed by the Senate and concurred by the House in late November. It has been sent to the governor’s office for his signature.
